The Pipeline Challenge kicked off on February 24th, the first day of the waiting period which ends March 9th, 2023.
Pipeline, the surf spot, didn’t show it’s teeth on the first day of competition, but Ehukai Beach showed some potential scoring opportunities instead. The event returns this Friday for more action with the Women’s Pro and Dropknee divisions
1st day wrap up: Competitors took on the challenge in 2-3 foot beach break. It was literally on the sand slams but they pulled off some of the maneuvers they are known for. Spins, rolls and ARS maneuvers scored high throughout the day. There are more than 100 top international athletes in three divisions.
Hawaiian Kawika Rohr-Kamai was one of the stand outs on the first round. He scored a high heat total of 16.67 points to win his heat and advance on to the second round. Score wise was also Kauai boy and former World Champion Jeff Hubbard, behind Kawika, with a 13.30 total heat score to advance in the draw.
Chilean Matias Diaz come in third regarding the top scores of the day, with a 13.27 points total, toring the shore break apart by pulling a perfect ARS to advance.
The Route 99 Hawaii / Bay Equity Home Loans Pipeline Bodyboarding Challenge is presented by the Foam Company, in memory of Don & Josie Over, and is organized by BodyboardingUS and supervised by APB North America with additional coordination by Kaikeha.
