The Ground Zero of the boogie board, or the “Birthplace of the Boogie”, Honl’s Beach,
Kona, Big Island, Hawaii, will have a tribute to Tom through an official sign, ceremony and blessing.
The ceremony will take place on Saturday, 11/6 @ 4:30PM. An official Global Paddle Out will take place, also.
The sign (6ft tall featuring the story of the Paipo board on the opposite side) is of historical significance and importance for the sport. The public is invited. So bring your boogie on that special day which happens to be the Bodyboarding International Day (takes place on the first Saturday of November).
Thomas Hugh Morey, known as Tom Morey, considered the father of bodyboarding and the one who made the world’s first boogie board, on July 7, 1971, did not survive to a brain surgery and died last Friday. He was 86 years old.
Rest in peace. 🙏
