The Adrar Animal Project, a non profit organization based in Morocco, that provides nutritional and medical assistance to street animals and promotes a healthy sustainable population, is saying the animals in the illustrated photos were poisoned and killed by the local authorities to make way for the Taghazout Bay World Bodyboard Championship.

Well, everyone that already visit Morocco knows the animals’ treatment may be cruel sometimes. When we first became aware of this killing, we thought why the hell did they need to kill the dogs for the competition? This is so wrong. It’s useless, unnecessary, disgusting and cruel. Sure made us sick.

It is hard to understand the motivation to do something so awful like this. Is it because of the athletes? Is it because of tourism? Why did the dogs have to be killed?

Here’s what the Adrar Animal Project wrote on their page:

“Yes, these dogs are dead. Dogs loved and cared for by the community of Taghazout.

This morning they were poisoned and killed by the authorities to make way for the Surf Competition at Anchor Point.

These are only a few of all those horrifically massacred.

These dogs include those who were sterilised and vaccinated (and clearly ear-tagged) who safeguarded the community.

People do you see this?
@fedesurfmaroc do you see this?
Will you be silent?
Do you condone this?

Or are you outraged by such cruelty?
Will you use your voice for good?

This barbaric system of massacre MUST STOP.

Not only does it cause horrific suffering but is wholly ineffective in dealing with the stray population. TNVR is a proven, humane method of managing a healthy and sustainable population of street dogs.”

The shocking images:

If yesterday we pointed out a positive aspect related to the Moroccan world championship (read here), today we cannot close our eyes and we have to point out this barbaric episode. Whether or not it is related to the event, this is absolutely reprehensible and cannot happen.

In fact, this type of situation is so common in Morocco that there is a petition (here) runing online to stop these “official” killings.

Moroccan authorities, be ashamed.
