Thomas Hugh Morey, considered the father of bodyboarding and the one who made the world’s first boogie board, on July 7, 1971, is currently on an operating table.
The shocking revelation was made by Tom’s son Sol Morey, who wrote earlier today the following on his Facebook account:
“Please take a moment to send good vibes and offer prayers of healing to my folks. My dad Tom Morey is in operating room to remove brain clot from bumping his head. Should be ok but your prayers shared will help with your love going forward. Mahalo!”
It is worth noting that, on October 6th, the creator of the modern bodyboard was distinguished by the city of Oceanside at an official ceremony (photo attached). That night, the Mayor, Esther Sánchez, issued a proclamation highlighting his work. What a special recognition for Tom on the 50th anniversary of the boogie board.
“What an honor to watch Tom Morey receive a proclamation from the city of Oceanside tonight. One thing the proclamation states is that he opened more doors for people to wave ride worldwide than any other person. So true!”, wrote Patti Serrano, who in the early days worked closely to Tom and was one of the great boosters of the sport.

A chocante revelação foi feita por Sol Morey, filho de Tom, que escreveu hoje o seguinte na sua conta de Facebook: “Por favor, aproveite este momento para enviar boas vibrações e orações para os meus pais. O meu pai, Tom Morey, está na sala de cirurgia para remover um coágulo cerebral que resultou de uma cabeçada involuntária. Deve correr tudo bem, mas a partilha das vossas orações e amor vão ajudar daqui para a frente. Mahalo!”
Vale realçar que, no dia 7 de outubro, o criador do bodyboard moderno foi distinguido pela cidade de Oceanside numa cerimónia oficial (foto anexa). Nessa noite, a presidente da Câmara, Esther Sánchez, emitiu uma proclamação onde destaca o trabalho desenvolvido pelo norte-americano.
“Que honra ver Tom Morey receber uma proclamação da cidade de Oceanside esta noite. Uma das coisas que a proclamação afirma é que ele abriu mais portas para as pessoas surfarem no mundo todo do que qualquer outra pessoa. Tão verdade!”, escreveu Patti Serrano, que nos primeiros tempos trabalhou na fábrica de Tom e foi uma das grandes impulsionadores da boogie board.
Votos de uma rápida recuperação. Tom Morey tem 86 anos. 🙏
