Brazilian big wave rider questions why we call backflip a maneuver when it’s just a loop.
Dudu Pedra is one of the local boys from Itacoatiara Beach, Niterói, Brazil. The man shreds, both in small or big hollow-intense-challenging waves. Sometimes he competes on the world tour but he also plays an important role in the technical department of the Brazilian Tour.
On his last Instagram post he invite us to do a reflection about one specific maneuver – the Backflip. In fact we had thought about it for many times, all the details mentioned are not new to us… but we guess we just never had the guts to question the status quo.
“I want to make it clear that I think one of the most technical and incredible maneuvers is what we call the backflip!”, says Dudu in first place, adding “But why do we call it a backflip, if that’s not really what all sports consider it to be?”
In the video below, the veteran bodyboarder gives some examples of backflips in motocross, snowboarding and even surfing. MAN, THEY ARE DIFFERENT!
So, this leads to the question if the Backflip maneuver shouldn’t be called instead a Flip or a Loop, for example… leaving the Backflip title for a real backflip? (those landed in front of the wave)
A healthy discussion about the evolution of our sport has started. What do you say?
Yay or Nay?
