4x Dropknee World Champion, Sammy Morretino, from Kauai, Hawaii, announced last week that he has been dealing with addiction issues and will enter a program to get clean.
Heavy news, but according to the Hawaiian shredder and former Dk world champ:
“On Monday I’m going to California to get sober and start a new chapter in my life. As most of you know, I’ve been struggling the last few years with a lot of things, addiction and depression being the main ones. I’ve struggled with them since my mother died from alcoholism in 2007. Within the last few months of my life I’ve had some of the hardest times of my life. I’ve learned a lot about myself and also lost some of the most important people and things in my life. Good things and bad things.
I can’t take back my actions in life, but I can learn from them and not repeat the same mistakes. Recently, I’ve felt like I’m not good enough or deserving of a lot of things in my life that I’ve accomplished or had in my life. Somehow thru it all bodyboarding has kept me somewhat grounded. But I do know that I feel it’s my mom putting me on a path to better myself and fulfill my potential!
Mahalo everyone for the support the last few years! I’ll be in Cali for a bit getting my life together.”
As you probably know, you may radiate energy and skills, but depression is one of the deadliest illnesses of our time. If you or someone you know is struggling with depression, don’t be afraid to ask for some help, there are organizations world wide that will listen and help you.
All the best for you, Sammy. And get well soon.
The Bodyboarding world needs you.
