In early January 2017, the tropical cyclone Auring made landfall in the Filipino island of Siargao, just north of Mindanao, travelling in the direction of Palawan. It left in its wake a minor trail of destruction on land and solid swell in the water, accompanied by some unseasonable offshore winds. David Ruiz, who was spending some time on the island with his girlfriend Maddi during their recent trip to the Philippines, lucked into several solo sessions, and several others in the company of a few locals. An experience he won’t be forgetting so soon.
